Barth won’t seek Encinitas city office

Teresa Barth has opted not to run again for Encinitas City Council, nor will she run for the city’s first elected mayoral seat, according to an April 5 announcement.

The decision fulfills a promise to serve two terms on the council, she told supporters in the announcement.

barth-teresa-2014-color“When I first ran in 2006, I said two terms (8 years) were appropriate for local office. However, the addition of a voter elected Mayor added a twist to my previous position,” she stated.

2014 marks the first time Encinitas voters will elect a mayor. Until now, the mayor’s position rotated among City Council members. Barth is currently serving as mayor. Councilwoman Kristin Gaspar will serve the second half of the final rotating term starting in early summer.

Barth said she doesn’t plan to run for the elected mayor position.

“While many people have encouraged me to run for Mayor, I stand by my original commitment to my family and the voters to only serve two terms,” she stated.
