The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department made 28 arrests during a sweep Nov. 26-27 along Coast Highway 101.

The sweep, which ran from 10 p.m. Nov. 26 to 2 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, was part of the Sheriff’s Department’s Holiday Watch program. The operation took place along the highway in Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana Beach.

Arrests were made for violations including outstanding warrants, possession of a false identification by a minor, drunk in public, public nudity, possession of open containers of alcohol and possession of a controlled substance, according to a Sheriff’s Department report.

According to the department, 30 deputies and agents from the California Department of Alcoholic and Beverage Control part in the sweep around liquor establishments along the highway. Authorities also checked area bars to see if they were serving to people who already had too much to drink.

The operation was part of the Sheriff’s Department’s Holiday Watch program, which runs now through the first week of January and is funded through a $100,000 grant from the state ABC.

“Every drunk person that wanders out of a bar without a sober driver to get them home safely, runs the risk of being involved in a collision or becoming a victim of a crime,” sheriff’s Lt. Rich Williams said in the department’s report. “Sometimes they walk out into traffic, walk out in front of trains or they are involved in fights. These are the things we want to prevent to ensure a safe holiday season.”
