Longtime adult-education provider San Dieguito Union High School District is on track to merge its program with MiraCosta College’s continuing education division, MiraCosta announced March 22.

The restructuring places Encinitas-based San Dieguito’s Adult Education division under MiraCosta’s Continuing and Community Education programs, based in Oceanside.

“We’re very excited to add more high-quality courses that benefit the communities of Encinitas, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and Carmel Valley,” MiraCosta Board of Trustees President David Broad President said in the announcement.

San Dieguito Adult School’s noncredit English as a Second Language, adult high school and other noncredit academic offerings will be overseen by MiraCosta’s Continuing Education Program, based at the college’s Mission Avenue location in Oceanside with classes held throughout the community, the college stated.

“Supporting current adult SDUHSD students throughout this transition has been a priority,” San Dieguito district Superintendent Rick Schmitt said in MiraCosta’s announcement. “SDUHSD and MiraCosta staff are working to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible by making every effort to offer our adult students the same neighborhood access and quality instruction they have come to know through the San Dieguito Community Education program. We believe more adult students will be reached than ever before as we transition to the MiraCosta College program.”

MiraCosta’s Continuing Education program offers courses this spring at new locations such as Sunset High School in Encinitas, the Encinitas Library and La Colonia de Eden Gardens Community Center in Solana Beach, the college district stated.

“The English as a Second Language classes that started recently in Solana Beach are so important,” La Colonia de Eden Gardens Foundation Board President Manny Aguilar said in the announcement. “The feedback from the residents in the community needs assessment called for these classes. Our immigrant community has been asking for ESL classes for years and now MiraCosta College is responding very generously.”

Community enrichment and workforce development programs offered by San Dieguito Adult School, such as metal fabrication, digital photography, guitar and other arts-related courses, will be overseen by MiraCosta’s Community Education and Workforce Development Program.

In addition to MiraCosta College’s main campus in Oceanside, the district also has a campus in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
