A 2-year-old boy found wandering an Encinitas park July 15 has been reunited with his parents, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Earlier in the day, authorities put the word out region-wide that they were searching for the child’s parents or guardians after he was found alone just after 1:30 p.m. at Cottonwood Creek Park on North Vulcan Avenue in Encinitas.

The boy’s parents called the Sheriff’s Department to report him missing at 6 p.m. when they discovered he was not at his preschool for pickup, authorities said in a statement issued just before 8 p.m. The Sheriff’s Department thanked the public and the news media for circulating word of the search.

Apparently, the boy and his sibling were dropped off at 9 a.m. at the preschool, which authorities did not name. The preschool had a park activity, and at some point, there was confusion in the head count and the students returned to the school without the child, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

No charges will be filed against the parents, the Sheriff’s Department stated, and the preschool is not being named as the investigation into the incident continues. The family is requesting privacy, authorities said.
