A sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a suspect on Coast Highway 101 in the Encinitas community of Leucadia on Oct. 24 after a pursuit in a carjacking involving a man and his young son, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The suspect, Joseph Ramos, 35, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries after the incident, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement. Ramos is a documented gang member and had been wanted in connection with a series of residential burglaries in which several guns had been stolen, the Sheriff’s Department stated.

The victims of the carjacking, a 27-year-old man and his 7-year-old son, were reportedly uninjured in the incident.

The shooting happened at 3:18 p.m. on Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia after a pursuit through Encinitas, according to authorities. Shortly before 2:30 p.m., deputies spotted Ramos on Orchard Wood Road in Encinitas and attempted to contact him. Ramos got into a black truck and fled, and deputies pursued him, according to the Sheriff’s Department statement.

Deputies terminated the pursuit and instead followed Ramos at a distance, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Ramos abandoned the truck at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Manchester Avenue in Encinitas and ran to a nearby parking lot, where he confronted the driver of a silver two-door Scion who was buckling his son into a car seat, authorities said. The driver complied with Ramos’ demands at gunpoint to drive him away from the area, authorities said.

Deputies caught up with the Scion a short time later and pulled the car over in the 1500 block of North Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia, according to the Sheriff’s Department statement. Ramos reportedly pointed the gun at the driver and his son, then exited the car with the gun still drawn. A deputy saw the gun pointed at him and fired several shots, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Ramos ran a short distance and fell.

Deputies took Ramos into custody and provided first aid until paramedics arrived, authorities said. Ramos was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station the San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, the Sheriff’s Department stated.
