A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Friday, Oct. 17, at Tamarack Avenue and Skyline Road in Carlsbad, authorities reported.
Officers responded to a report of a traffic collision just before 11:20 a.m. in which the caller stated that the driver had initially left the scene, according to a Carlsbad Police Department report. When officers arrived, they found the pedestrian dead in the street.
The suspected driver returned to the scene while officers were there, the department’s report stated. Police identified the man as Paul Hiniker, 57, of Carlsbad. He was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of “leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death and vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence,” the report stated.
The identity of the victim was not released pending a San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office report.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the incident, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing, and the Carlsbad Police Department seeks additional witnesses.
Those who might have additional information about the collision are asked to contact traffic accident investigator Ricardo Huerta at 442-339-5621.
