The U.S. Geological Survey website has reported an earthquake near Ridgecrest, California, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale, at about 8:20 p.m. Friday, July 5. Residents of Encinitas and elsewhere in North San Diego County have reported feeling the quake.

Encinitas has maintained its Tree City USA status for an eighth year, the city announced June 3. The city earned the Arbor Day Foundation’s notation, which recognizes communities’ efforts to maintain an urban tree canopy.
