Editorial: A new start in Encinitas

History is turning an important page in Encinitas in wake of the announcement that the Paul Ecke Ranch is changing hands. It’s with that sense of history – and the future – that the North Coast Current relaunches its news production.

Surely, we can expect a multitude of voices in the coming debate about what should be done with the ranch as it changes hands to the Leichtag Foundation of Carlsbad. As this new chapter begins for Encinitas and its surrounding communities, it is the North Coast Current’s goal to be a conduit for that debate. It’s also not lost on the Current that this is an election year, which may well add a certain intensity to the discussion.

The media landscape in San Diego County, the North Coast region included, is facing a multitude of challenges both technological and economic. These forces present an opportunity to build community news outlets that merge the best of so-called “old media” with the choices and instant linkage that new media can provide. However, as people discover they’re inundated with a nonstop onslaught of news – often frivolous or impossible to sort through – it becomes clearer that more news is not necessarily constructive.

Despite that potential overkill, the new media era we’re entering allows for experimentation and a greater community of voices. In that optimistic spirit, the North Coast Current pledges to provide news and discussion of quality rather than quantity.

Whether it’s coverage of governance, community activities, people or business, the Current will endeavor to provide quality coverage of Encinitas and its neighbors.
