Temperature hits 99 in Encinitas

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for the region Friday as temperatures hit above 100 all over the county and Encinitas hit 99 degrees by the afternoon.

The 99-degree reading was reported by the Weather Service at 1:51 p.m., with temperatures hitting 90 in Carlsbad, 105 in San Marcos, 85 in Solana Beach and 82 in Del Mar. Moderate easterly Santa Ana winds were also reported in the region. The temperature in downtown San Diego hit 106 degrees as of 2:53 p.m., according to the Weather Service.

“Temperatures today have reached 100 to 107 across the coastal slopes and inland valleys,” the Weather Service stated. “The only areas below 100 were on the immediate coast, especially San Diego County.

“Temperatures are expected to be hotter, near record, on Saturday for the immediate coast and I-5 corridor, reaching around 100 and continuing around 105 just inland. Hottest locations will be 108 along I-15,” the statement continued.

The Weather Service said temperatures overnight should dip to the 70s, with a cooling trend beginning by Sunday.

Officials advised that people take precautions, such as avoiding outdoor activities during the late morning and afternoon, drinking plenty of fluids, and keeping watch over children and the elderly.
