Schools closed due to fire emergency

Update 10:40 p.m. May 15: All colleges and school districts listed below have announced closures for Friday, May 16.

Several school districts in North County have announced closures in the wake of major brush fires in the region May 14 that have damaged or destroyed several homes.

Students at Cal State San Marcos were evacuated as the Cocos Fire threatened the campus earlier in the day on May 14. The university campus will be closed Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16. Commencement ceremonies slated for May 16 and 17 have been postponed, according to CSUSM’s website, www.csusm.edu. The university has also closed its Temecula campus through the end of the week. MiraCosta College’s campuses in Oceanside and Cardiff are also closed Thursday, May 15, according to the community college’s website, www.miracosta.edu. Final exams have also been delayed as a result. Visit the college’s website for updates.

Palomar College in San Marcos has canceled all classes and activities for Thursday, May 15, according to the community college’s website, www.palomar.edu. Classes and activities at Palomar’s Escondido, Camp Pendleton and Fallbrook campuses are also canceled, the college reported. Updates: www.palomar.edu/alert/alert.htm.
