The Chesterfield Drive intersection at the rail crossing in Cardiff, closed since the start of the year for infrastructure improvements, is on track to reopen Jan. 23, according to a San Diego Association of Governments progress report.

Drivers and pedestrians will see new lighting and traffic signals, improved safety measures and an updated rail crossing in preparation for a future train horn quiet zone through Cardiff, the report stated. New disabled-accessible sidewalks and ramps and multi-use, separated bikeway and pedestrian path are also included in the project.

Pavement striping, final signal testing, landscaping, and installation of signage and guard rails are among the projects awaiting completion.

The closure was necessary for ongoing work at the rail crossing as part of the Build NCC and Coastal Rail Corridor projects, which includes the quiet zone. The zone would eliminate the need for train horns when approaching the crossing.
