Graduating high school seniors in Encinitas are invited to apply for this year’s Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library scholarship.

The $1,500 award is open to those students living in zip codes 92007 (Cardiff) and 92024 (Encinitas), according to an organization announcement. Applicants must also have their own valid San Diego county library card.

The submission deadline is May 1 at 6 p.m.

To apply, eligible students must be completing their high school senior year and planning to attend a college, university or trade school in 2019.

Applicants must submit a maximum 500-word essay covering how library experiences have influenced their education and why they seek post-secondary education, and their special interests and extra-curricular activities. Applications also need two non-family letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, employers, youth leaders or neighbors.

In addition, students need to include proof of their high school registration and residency, and copies of their current campus ID and library cards.

Application packets must be received by mail May 1 to Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library, P.O. Box 657, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007; or 6 p.m. May 1 in person to the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library Book Nook, 2081 Newcastle Ave.

A panel of community judges will evaluate the applications, essays and supporting materials, and select the top four candidates. Winners will be notified by May 29.
