Authorities have identified a man who was found dead Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the ocean south of Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Gabriel Reed, 26. The examiner’s report, which was released Monday, Sept. 16, did not list a cause of death or city of residence.

On the afternoon of Sept. 11, lifeguards retrieved a surfboard and body from the water after spotting them from the shore, according to an account included in the Medical Examiner’s report. The man, now identified as Reed, was pronounced dead when he was brought to shore.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, the examiner’s report stated. Next of kin have been notified.
