Current earns Press Club awards for website, nature reporting

North Coast Current

The North Coast Current’s environmental and nature reporting and overall website earned the Encinitas-based news journal several awards from the San Diego Press Club on Oct. 29.

The Current won second place news site from the organization during its annual Excellence in Journalism Awards held at the Jacobs Center in San Diego.

Contributor Cameron Niven won second place online/daily environmental writing for his piece “Environmental hot water? Local ocean temperatures hitting historic highs,” about 2018’s unusually high local ocean temperatures. Contributor Meghan Lanigan won third place in the same category for “San Elijo Lagoon restoration progressing fast into next phase,” a story about the ongoing environmental project between Cardiff and Solana Beach.

North Coast Current Publisher and Editorial Director Roman S. Koenig won third place online/daily wildlife and nature story for his piece “Respite from recent rains opens window for painted ladies,” about spring 2019’s proliferation of butterflies. Koenig also won second place for headline writing in for online and daily newspapers.
