Encinitas resident Alex Riley seeks District 1 council seat

Alex Riley has launched his campaign for Encinitas City Council, challenging incumbent Tony Kranz in District 1.

Riley’s candidacy was announced July 3 in the political newsletter Encinitas Current (not affiliated with the North Coast Current).

The district covers Leucadia north of Leucadia Boulevard east through portions of New Encinitas bordering Carlsbad.

“My wife and I bought our ‘forever home’ in Leucadia to get away from the City of San Diego which we thought was moving in the wrong direction,” Riley states on his campaign website.

In his biography on the site, Riley credits much of his recovery from career-ending injuries sustained as a San Diego lifeguard to Encinitas’ atmosphere and the area’s medical professionals.

Local control of housing decisions tops Riley’s list of campaign platform.

“I know from first hand experience the absolute feeling of dread when finding out that an oversized development is going to be built on your street,” Riley states.

Pubic safety, infrastructure improvements and government transparency are also part of Riley’s stated platform.

Riley joins two other challengers for seats on the City Council. Susan Turney is running against District 2 incumbent Kellie Shay Hinze. Julie Thunder is a candidate for mayor against incumbent Catherine Blakespear.
