Encinitas mayoral and City Council candidate forums are going digital this election season as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The League of Women Voters’ North County chapter has partnered with two Encinitas town councils to host the forums in September and October.

All of the forums will be recorded and then posted online for the public, according to announcements from the organizers. The League of Women Voters North County San Diego will moderate the events.

The first set of forums, set for Sept. 24 and 30, will be sponsored by the Leucadia/Encinitas Town Council. A second mayoral forum sponsored by the Cardiff Town Council is scheduled for Oct. 6.

Encinitas residents are invited to submit questions to the candidates, according to news releases announcing the forums. Submitted questions will be reviewed to prevent duplications and eliminate topics not appropriate for the forums.

Encinitas City Council Districts 1 and 2 are up for grabs this year.

Incumbent Tony Kranz is running for District 1 in the first election for the spot since districts were created. Alex Riley also seeks the seat. District 1 covers most of Leucadia, and portions of Old Encinitas and New Encinitas.

Deputy Mayor Kellie Shay Hinze is the appointed incumbent for District 2 and is now running for election. Susan Turney is also a candidate. District 2 covers Old Encinitas except for an east portion in the Cardiff district, and a portion of Leucadia.

Mayor Catherine Blakespear faces challenger Julie Thunder. The seat is elected at-large.
