Solana Beach winds hit 65 mph during Monday storm

Solana Beach and Del Mar were among the communities that experienced the strongest wind gusts in San Diego County as a storm swept through the region Monday, local weather officials reported.

A gale warning was canceled Tuesday morning but a small-craft advisory remained in effect for local waters through 4 p.m. A high surf advisory was also in effect.

Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach recorded a gust of 65 mph 3 p.m. and Del Mar hit 56 mph at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, according to the National Weather Service. Oceanside Harbor recorded a top gust of 52 mph at 8 a.m.

Encinitas and Carlsbad recorded winds from the mid 30s to 40s. An SDG&E station in Olivenhain recorded a top gust of 43 mph at 3 p.m., the weather service reported.

Strong winds, cold temperatures, rain and bouts of hail pummeled the region throughout the day into the early morning hours of Tuesday. The storm also brought snow to local mountains to elevations near 2,000 feet.

Wind damage from fallen trees and branches, and other wind-related damage, was reported throughout the county. Encinitas sports fields were closed during the storm and are expected to reopen as conditions improve, the city announced.
