Former Encinitas Councilwoman Jody Hubbard has died after a yearlong battle with cancer, Mayor Catherine Blakespear announced June 7 via Facebook.

“I’m so sad to share that my dear friend and former City Council colleague slipped away from this world earlier this morning after a short time on hospice and year-long battle with lung and then brain cancer,” Blakespear said in the announcement, which was posted on her state Senate campaign page. “Jody was a bright light and a pure joy. As recently as a few days ago, when I last visited, she laughed, shared the latest and maintained her familiar zest.”

Hubbard announced her resignation earlier this year effective immediately at the City Council’s Jan. 13 meeting. She represented District 3, which encompasses Cardiff and portions of Encinitas. In August 2020, Hubbard said she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, which later spread to her brain.

“It’s with a heavy heart, but I need to announce that I am resigning off of my Encinitas City Council seat effective tonight,” Hubbard said Jan. 13.

She ran Jody Hubbard Long Term Care Planning for two decades and was elected to the District 3 City Council seat in November 2018.
