The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has identified a man who was shot and killed in a confrontation with deputies in Encinitas on June 18.

Eric Scott Anderson, 40, of San Diego, was killed when two deputies fired on him after “he produced a handgun,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release. The announcement did not provide further details of Anderson’s use of the handgun.

Deputies were called to a home in the 1500 block of Eolus Avenue in Leucadia at about 8 a.m. Friday, Junde 18, after a report of suspicious activity in the area, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The deputies attempted lifesaving measures on Anderson after the shooting, but he later died at a local hospital, according to authorities.

The sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating the incident, the department stated.
