San Diego County CA— The SANDAG iCommute program awarded mini-grants to 16 San Diego County schools and one school district that are working to promote safe, active transportation choices for local students.
The mini-grants – awarded through iCommute’s Walk, Ride, and Roll to School program – support activities that encourage students to travel to and from school in active ways, including biking, walking, skating, skateboarding, or riding a scooter. The grants also help pay for additional programs that promote pedestrian and bike safety around schools.
SANDAG had $30,000 in mini-grant funding available, with individual programs eligible for a maximum of $1,500.

Flora Vista Elementary School
Solana Highlands Elementary School
Edison Elementary School
Vista Square School
The mini-grants will help fund a variety of innovative programs, such as a Bike Rodeo and Mural event; Walk, Ride, and Roll to School Week; an eight-week Ditch the Drive program; a Walk-on-Wednesdays (WOW) campaign; a Move Your Feet campaign; and Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Education Week, among others.
iCommute’s Walk, Ride, and Roll to School program also offers free classes and organized activities for schools, including bike and pedestrian safety assemblies, bike rodeos, encouragement rides, bike tune-up events, and skateboarding safety classes. These classes and events will be available to San Diego County schools and districts throughout the 2015/2016 school year. They are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The Walk, Ride, and Roll to School program is an annual effort designed to raise awareness about the benefits of more active forms of transportation while promoting pedestrian and bike safety for students.
iCommute, the SANDAG Transportation Demand Management program, encourages the use of transportation alternatives to help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
