Chief McCoy welcomes Officer, Mike Hatfield with Captain Bechler
Oceanside CA— Tum Vongsawad, chief operating officer, San Diego County Credit Union, was recently honored by the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) San Diego office with a 2016 Father of the Year award.
Vongsawad and wife Jamie have been married for nearly 33 years and are parents to three sons. The oldest, age 31, is an attorney, the second, age 30, is a financial advisor, and the youngest, age 27, a high school physics teacher.
Vongsawad also has been influential in the life of his nephew, the only child of his deceased brother. Vongsawad learned of the loss of his brother, who passed at age 24 from a brain aneurysm, while serving during a two-year mission in the Fiji Islands. His nephew, who works today as a financial advisor, is married with three children. His three sons and nephew have each earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
“Fatherhood is a gift and I am who I am today because of our three sons and nephew,” said Vongsawad, an Oceanside resident. “They are my heroes.”
Vongsawad has worked in banking since 1986. He graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine. He also is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. During his banking career, Vongsawad has served in various leadership roles, including senior VP, executive VP and interim president and CEO. He joined SDCCU in 2000. He has served as SDCCU’s COO since 2008.
Two other local fathers were honored at the ADA’s 13th annual Father of the Year awards dinner held June 16. They included Jeffrey Martin, CEO, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Tracy Sundlun, senior VP of global events, Competitor Group. ADA officials said the fundraiser generated more than $200,000 in donations for diabetes research and programs and services for people with diabetes.
The ADA said its Father of the Year awards program honors fathers who have demonstrated the ability to balance their personal lives, serve as role models of strength, commitment and love for their children and help make positive contributions to their families and communities. The New York-based Father’s Day Council, which began the awards program in 1942, designated the ADA as its charity partner in 1999. In 2004, the San Diego ADA office began its Father of the Year awards program. Over the past 13 years in San Diego, the awards program has generated more than $2 million in donations.
