Marrying Science Technology Engineering Art and Math Together
For the Fun of it at the 2016 San Diego County Fair June 15 – 16, 2016
Del Mar CA— The Summer STEAM Maker Festival, hosted by STEAM Maker Workshop and the San Diego County Fair, sponsored by Albertsons|Vons, is a two-day event, Wednesday, June 15, and Thursday, June 16, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., featuring numerous make-and-take activity stations, daily STEAM challenges, a presentation stage, a kids drama workshop, a K-Zone with an insect theme, educational vendors offering hands on activities and so much more!
The San Diego Pavilion in Family Funville will play host to the STEAM Maker Workshop, an educational facility in Mission Valley offering professional development classes for educators, curriculum development, consulting, in-school/after-school programs and more to schools throughout San Diego County. Annually, the STEAM Maker Workshop holds the STEAM Maker Festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds attracting more than 5,000 guests. The Summer STEAM Maker Festival bridges the gap between school-based STEAM programs and the Maker Movement, showcasing educational creativity and resources to cross pollinate and elevate the proliferation of STEAM programs and features local schools, vendors, exhibitors, and interactive displays. More information can be found here at http://www.steammakerfest.org/.
Space to participate in the Summer STEAM Maker Festival challenges at the Fair is limited, so registration is encouraged for the six FREE group challenges found at http://www.steammakerfest.org/2016-challenges/. All challenges consist of teams of three-to four students and include:
STEAM Maker Robot Challenge (Grades 5 – 12): Teams will be provided mentorship, instruction and an Arduino based kit to build a line-following robot. Teams will design their robot to use sensors and motors to direct the vehicle over an obstacle course.
Backyard Safari Challenge (Grades K-4): Steam Maker Workshop has teamed up with Alex Brands® in this challenge where student teams will be provided entomological catch and release equipment to collect insects in their backyard or neighborhood. Teams will have 30 days prior to their visit to the San Diego County Fair to collect, monitor, record, and release the insects found. The challenge will culminate in teams presenting their findings via poster board to a panel of judges at the Summer STEAM Maker Festival at the San Diego County Fair.
Build-it Recycled Fashion Challenge (Grade 3-12): Teams build and showcase an outfit made of recycled materials that would be worn to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! Teams will bring a bag of clean, safe, and recyclable material where they will have an hour to build their garment and present it on stage in front of an audience.
Bring-it Recycled Device (Grade 3-12): This challenge has teams build and showcase a device they would take down the “rabbit hole” – also made of recycled materials. Teams will bring their device to the Summer STEAM Maker Festival and then present it on stage in front of an audience explaining what their device is and how they plan to use it for the rabbit hole.
*Raspberry Pi® Microsoft Developer Challenge (grades 9-12): Working in teams of two to three, students will be given a free two-day, Microsoft Development boot camp at the STEAM Maker Workshop with a Microsoft developer, a Windows 10 IoT Core with Raspberry Pi 2 Starter Kit, and will then have 30 days to build, test and display their Windows 10 Application on stage at the Summer STEAM Maker Festival at the San Diego County Fair.
This event will also take place during the Fairgrounds’ Field Trip Program taking place June 15 and 16. The event will open early at 9:30 a.m. to school groups involved in the field trip program, and then open to the public at 11 a.m.
