Carlsbad CA— Yesterday morning, June 2nd 2016, at approximately 11:04am, deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to a train vs. pedestrian collision on the railroad tracks at milepost marker 235.4, which is located near the intersection of Avenida Encinas and Ponto Drive in the city of Carlsbad.
A southbound Amtrak train was traveling at approximately (86) eighty-six miles per hour when the engineer observed a pedestrian on the tracks. The Amtrak train immediately applied the emergency braking system and warning horn, but was unable to stop prior to striking the pedestrian.
According to witnesses, the pedestrian did not respond to the train’s horn warnings prior to being struck. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
