Lane Closures Tonight on I-5 Near Gilman Drive, North of La Jolla
Crews Preparing for Construction of Gilman Drive Bridge
San Diego County CA— Today, Mid-Coast Transit Constructors, a SANDAG contractor, is starting work to prepare for construction of the Gilman Drive Bridge, north of La Jolla Village Drive and south of Voigt Drive. The bridge will connect Gilman Drive to Medical Center Drive, linking the east campus and west campus of UC San Diego.
In order to install barricades along I-5 near the future Gilman Drive Bridge, crews will close two lanes in both northbound and southbound directions overnight. The lanes will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. tonight (Nov. 14) and reopen by 5 a.m. tomorrow (Nov. 15). The barricades will be in place through 2018. This preliminary work may also include removal of vegetation in the area.
Once complete, the bridge will improve traffic circulation and access for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, as well as UC San Diego students, personnel, and medical staff. The project budget is $20 million. The bridge is expected to open in the summer of 2018.
The neighboring I-5/Genesee Avenue Interchange project, which is ongoing, will have concurrent work and closures on I-5 at Genesee Avenue, Monday through Thursday, November 14–17, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. One direction of the freeway will be closed at a time to allow construction crews to install temporary wood forms that will be used to build the foundation of the new I-5/Genesee Avenue Bridge.
