Oceanside and La Jolla are among California coastal communities on a tsunami watch list as of 5:19 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia.
Any effects from a potential tsunami aren’t expected to be observed here until about 1:15 a.m. July 30, however, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
Watches and warnings were issued by the National Weather Service’s National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, for areas of the West Coast from British Columbia south to the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as Hawaii and the Alaska Aleutian Islands. The quake struck at 4:25 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. The U.S. Geological Survey updated the magnitude to 8.8, although the National Weather Service and other statements reported the quake to have been 8.7.
Tsunami warnings and advisories include more immediate action. Under a tsunami watch, such as that for Oceanside and La Jolla, coastal residents and visitors are asked to be prepared for more information and take action as recommended.
Other California coastal areas under the tsunami watch include Newport Beach, Los Angeles Harbor, Santa Barbara, Port San Luis, Monterey, San Francisco, Crescent City and Fort Bragg.
