Authorities rescued four people from a boat that was swept into the surf line just past Harbor Beach in Oceanside on Sunday, Sept. 28.
Oceanside Fire Department crews and lifeguards responded to a call of a recreational boat in distress at 12:24 p.m. just outside the mouth of Oceanside Harbor, according to a Fire Department report. Rescuers arrived quickly and were able to rescue the four people without incident.
The rescued boaters were evaluated and released by Fire Department personnel, the report stated. The city’s Marine Safety Unit secured the boat and towed it past the surf line.
The incident occurred as the San Diego County and Orange County coastlines face rougher seas and rip currents as remnants of Hurricane Narda churn up the waters, according to the National Weather Service. Wave heights could reach 4 to 7 feet with occasional 8-foot sets at south and southwest-facing beaches.
“Elevated surf and dangerous rip currents are expected along San Diego County beaches through Tuesday,” the Fire Department stated. “The Oceanside Fire Department reminds beachgoers and boaters to exercise extra caution, check conditions before entering the water, and wear lifejackets when on the ocean.”
