The Encinitas Library has been recognized as a California Certified Green Business, becoming the fourth organization in the city to achieve the distinction through the Encinitas Green Business Network.
City and Encinitas Chamber of Commerce leaders held a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, Nov. 6, to mark the award.
The certification recognizes workplaces that meet state standards for reducing waste, saving energy and water, and preventing pollution. The library earned its status through a months-long process that included audits, staff training and operational improvements verified by the program’s partner, the U.S. Green Building Council California. The nonprofit manages the certification statewide and provides technical support for local participants.
In addition to the library, other Encinitas organizations already certified include the nonprofit Solana Center for Environmental Innovation, Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants and Surfdog’s Java Hut.
“Becoming a California Certified Green Business reflects the Encinitas Library’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and the overall well-being of our community,” Diana Minuzzi, branch manager of the Encinitas Library, said in a city news release. “Ensuring that our space continues to inspire, educate, and support both people and the planet.”
The Green Business Network helps local organizations strengthen their environmental practices through education, free technical assistance and shared resources, city Sustainability Manager Crystal Najera said in the news release. The statewide program reports that more than 4,500 certified businesses have cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 400,000 metric tons collectively.
“It has been a pleasure supporting the Encinitas Library through their certification process,” Robert Carr, training and program manager at the U.S. Green Building Council – California, said in the news release. “Their dedication to reducing environmental impacts and serving as a role model for other businesses embodies the spirit of the Encinitas Green Business Network.”
Encinitas launched its local Green Business Network in 2023 in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and the Green Building Council’s California chapter. Businesses, nonprofits and public agencies interested in certification can contact the city’s Climate Action team or attend one of the city’s upcoming informational webinars.
