A longtime Encinitas city employee has been chosen to fill a new position dedicated to transportation-related mobility, the city announced this month.

Nick Buck, who has worked in Encinitas city government for more than two decades, now serves as the city’s mobility manager. The position is designed to coordinate city departments on mobility-related projects and issues.

The appointment comes in the wake of the death of a teen cyclist in June. The city launched an e-bike safety campaign following the implementation of an updated bicycle ordinance that took effect July 28.

“Given the tragic passing of an Encinitas teen this past June while riding on his eBike and the Council’s adoption of an emergency order on June 28th, the appointment of Buck to the Mobility Manager position could not be more important than in this moment in time,” City Manager Pamela Antil said in a city news release. “Nick knows Encinitas. I am confident that he will be an effective bridge between city departments, schools, cycling advocates, and the community.”

The position was created by the City Council as part of the 2023-24 budget, according to the city.

Buck started with the city as recreation coordinator in the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. Most recently, he served as events and special projects supervisor. He has a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration from San Diego State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
