Palomar College has chosen to close its facilities Monday, Aug. 21, as Tropical Storm Hilary arrived in the region.

The community college district’s size and its reach into rural North San Diego County were among the reasons cited for the decision, which was announced Sunday in a news release. The storm’s center passed by East County at about 5 p.m. Sunday, weather officials reported.

“Our district serves 2,500 square miles of northern San Diego County, including some of the most rural areas of our region. Closing our main campus and education centers was not an easy decision, as our students and employees were looking forward to the first day of the fall semester,” district Superintendent/President Star Rivera-Lacey said in the news release.

MiraCosta College in Oceanside, which also has a campus in the Encinitas community of Cardiff, will be open on Monday.

“After closely assessing all current weather models, MiraCosta College will maintain normal campus operations at all four sites—Oceanside Campus (OC), Community Learning Center (CLC), San Elijo (SAN), and Technology Career Institute (TCI)—for the start of the fall 2023 semester,” MiraCosta officials said in a Sunday update.

California State University San Marcos and San Diego State University are both closed Monday.
