Pacific Trails Middle School physical education teacher Tyler Kuehl has been named the 2025 Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the San Dieguito Union High School District announced May 29.
The statewide honor recognizes noteworthy contributions to physical education, student wellness and the promotion of lifelong fitness.
Kuehl, who is completing his 10th year as a PE teacher and his third year at Pacific Trails in Carmel Valley, was previously recognized as San Diego County’s Middle School PE Teacher of the Year in 2023 and 2024.
Kuehl was recognized for his holistic approach to physical education, his dedication to social-emotional learning, and his profound commitment to fostering student connection. He said he emphasizes the power of knowing students by name.
“It’s a powerful moment — the affirmation that they are seen and valued,” Kuehl said, adding that this foundation of respect and connection sets the tone for everything else. “When I build these relationships with my students, I feel as if my teaching becomes a little bit easier. They participate, they push themselves, and most importantly, they have fun.”
Above all, Kuehl said he hopes students leave his class feeling confident, seen, and willing to take risks.
“They learn from failure and understand the importance of the process rather than the product,” he said.
In addition to promoting fitness, Kuehl incorporates social-emotional learning into his curriculum, helping students navigate topics such as stress, goal-setting and vulnerability.
“Most of my family and friends would probably tell you I’m a kid at heart,” Kuehl said about what fuels his energy to teach. “Maybe that’s why I have so much fun doing what I do. I get to play every day and work out. That young-at-heart mentality hasn’t changed, and I hope it never does, even when I’m 70.”
