A boy was injured Wednesday, Oct. 8, when a truck plowed into the Gelato 101 building in downtown Encinitas after a collision with another vehicle, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
North Coastal Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to the incident just before 6 p.m. after reports that a northbound 2026 Chevy Silverado hit the building at 480 S. Coast Highway 101 after rear-ending a 2022 Toyota Prius on the thoroughfare near west D Street.
The boy was injured when he was hit and trapped beneath the truck when it entered the building, a Sheriff’s Office report stated. First responders found the boy conscious and breathing, and they were able to free him for transport to Rady Children’s Hospital for treatment.
The occupants of the Prius did not appear to be injured, authorities reported.
Deputies arrested the driver of the Silverado, who the Sheriff’s Office identified as Edward De La Torre, 64, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The North Coastal Sheriff’s Station continues to investigate the incident.
