MiraCosta College will have new leadership in August following the retirement of its longtime superintendent/president and a national search for a replacement.
Trustees unanimously approved Lennor M. Johnson as the district’s next superintendent/president June 25. Johnson, who currently leads the Imperial Valley Community College District, will be the first African American superintendent/president in MiraCosta’s 92-year history.
Johnson, who is set to begin his new role Aug. 3, will succeed retiring Superintendent/President Sunita “Sunny” Cooke, who joined MiraCosta in 2015.
Cooke announced last fall that she planned to retire this summer after a decade with the district and nearly 40 years in higher education. Board of Trustees President Frank Merchat said Johnson was selected for his leadership experience and record of working on student-access issues.
“The Board is confident that his collaborative approach, passion for equity, and dedication to community partnerships make him the ideal leader to build upon the solid foundation Dr. Cooke has established,” Merchat said in a district news release.
Johnson has more than 28 years of higher-education leadership experience. He comes to MiraCosta from the Imperial Valley Community College District, where he served as superintendent/president and where the district earned the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence during his tenure, according to MiraCosta.
Before becoming Imperial Valley College’s superintendent/president, Johnson joined the college as dean of student services in 2016 and became vice president of student services in 2018.
Johnson’s Imperial Valley College profile states that he played a role in the development of its prison education program, dual-enrollment efforts, food pantry, student housing and other services for foster youth, students with disabilities, formerly incarcerated students, students experiencing homelessness and other disproportionately impacted groups. He also secured millions of dollars in grant funding for student services, according to the college.
Earlier in his career, Johnson held positions including campus director, dean, graduate curriculum chair, professor, director of community relations and academic adviser.
As campus director at Bryant & Stratton College, he oversaw two Wisconsin campuses and led initiatives credited with improving student services, career placement, retention and financial performance. At Robert Morris University, where he served as dean, he helped broaden access for first-generation students, veterans, athletes, out-of-state students and international students.
Johnson is a four-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Robert Morris University, a master’s degree in business administration from Governors State University and a doctorate in education from Argosy University.
The MiraCosta Community College District’s main campus is in Oceanside, in addition to the San Elijo campus in Cardiff, the Technology Career Institute in Carlsbad and Community Learning Center in Oceanside.
