The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office will hold a firearm turn-in event Saturday, July 18, at Encinitas City Hall, offering gift cards in exchange for unwanted guns.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 505 S. Vulcan Ave., according to a Sheriff’s Office announcement. The agency is partnering with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and the Carlsbad and Oceanside police departments.
Participants may receive $100 gift cards for working handguns, rifles and shotguns, and $200 gift cards for assault weapons and ghost guns. The Sheriff’s Office stated that participants may remain anonymous and no questions will be asked.
Firearms must be unloaded and placed in the trunk of the participant’s vehicle before arrival. Deputies or police officers will provide further instructions at the event.
All collected weapons will be destroyed, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Free firearm trigger locks also will be distributed while supplies last.
