Grant Hasselbach gets some big air while kite surfing at the South Jetty.

Oceanside CA- Trees, power and telephone lines are down. The CHP reported 236 accidents in a 12 hour period ending at 12 noon today. The CHP stated the normal number is 50 to 75 on a good weather day. Local first responders were kept busy throughout the day with serious accidents on I-5, Rancho Del Oro, Vista Way and College Blvd. along with numerous incidents on side streets plus fire alarms being set off by the damp weather.

David Chanes takes advantage of the high winds.

The bad weather was play-time for three ambitious souls who braved the wind, rain and strong currents to go kite surfing at the South Jetty, in Oceanside.
Ken Jones, Grant Hasselbach and David Chanes donned wetsuits, grabbed the kites and hit the surf sometimes soaring up to forty-feet in the air. “If there is a bad storm, this is where you will find us.” said Jones who has been kite surfing for almost 12 years. Jones said they kite surf in Orange County during the summer season but bad weather brings them to the Oceanside and Carlsbad coast. “We can kite surf in 10 mph winds but the fun doesn’t really start until the wind gets above 25 mph” said Chanes.

The forecast is for more of the same weather, over the weekend, with thunderstorms possible and the system moving out of Southern California late Sunday.
