Update: The skydiver who died in a mid-air collision over Jamul, Jordan Jor-El Janway was the brother-in-law of 6 time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson. Original story below-
Jamul CA – On Sunday, March 30, at approximately 4:11 p.m., 27 year-old Jordan Jor-El Janway, of Chula Vista, went skydiving with two other individuals at Skydive San Diego in Jamul. For unknown reasons, the decedent collided with one of the other jumpers during freefall. He failed to deploy his parachute and impacted the ground at terminal velocity. A 911 call was placed and when law enforcement located the decedent, his death was confirmed without medical intervention due to obviously fatal injuries.
Deputies from the Imperial Beach Station responded to a missing person at risk at 13531 Otay Lakes Road, (Skydive San Diego). The reporting party stated during a sky-dive two skydivers collided in midair. One of the two skydivers landed safely with the group but the second did not and they did not see his parachute deploy.
Deputies, Border Patrol Agents, Cal-Fire Firefighters’ and approximately twenty skydiving volunteers began searching the area for the missing skydiver. The Sheriff’s A.S.T.R.E.A. helicopter also responded and located the missing skydiver with obvious signs of death.
The Medical Examiner came to the scene and took custody of the deceased and will be handling the investigation.
