Work is set to begin next month on safety improvements around Laurel Elementary School, the city of Oceanside announced Thursday, June 13.

The Laurel Elementary Safe Routes to School project, funded in part by a $127,000 Caltrans grant, will install improvements along portions of Laurel, Holly and San Diego streets, according to a city announcement. Elements will include a high-visibility crosswalk, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, striping and signage, traffic-calming median, traffic circle, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps, and new sidewalks.

Construction is set to begin in July and continue for the rest of the year.

The Laurel Elementary Safe Routes to School project is part of a larger city effort to identify improvements needed in areas around Oceanside schools, according to the city. The Laurel project was developed after an assessment that included data collection, parent surveys, neighborhood consultations and school collaboration.
