RANDOM THOUGHTS – Our leaders in Washington seemed to be squabble to no end on what to do with all those illegal Central American children. The Progressives want to hug ‘em, and the Conservatives want to send them backing back south. Meanwhile, one lone Marine is languishing in a Tijuana prison and no one in Washington is doing anything or seems to care. . . . That burst water main adjacent to UCLA should be a warning to the rest of us. O’side and most of the other cities in San Diego County could experience the same problem at any time due to aging pipes and valves. Given the current drought circumstances we’re under, losing more water would be tragic.
SAD PASSING – Lifelong O’sider Concha Green passed away July 24, at the age of 68. Concha was an Eastside community leader who was instrumental in establishing the Joe Baldarama Community Center. A 1964 graduate of Oceanside High School, Concha was one of the best-known activist in O’side’s Latino community, primarily working with youth. A rosary will be at 1 p.m., with a mass at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s By The Sea Catholic Church.
FILM FEST – The late Junior Seau’s life will be the centerpiece of KOCT’s “The Legacy of Oceanside High School” at today’s (Sunday) opening of the annual Oceanside Film Festival at 2 to 6 p.m. at the Star Theatre downtown. The Seau film will deal with his days attending Oceanside High School. Junior went on to star in football at USC and then played several years for the San Diego Chargers, where he became one of NFL’s premiere linebackers. Junior died three years ago.
SURF’s UP – The Longboard Surfing Club has kicked off its 30th annual contest, which will draw surfers from up and down the coast. The surfing event was first organized by former Blade-Tribune editor Bill Missett, an avid surfer. The O’side club will be competing with other California clubs. The event is open to professional and amateurs.
NIGHT OUT – O’side’s communities of Eastside, Crown Heights, and Libby Lake will participate in the National Night Out on Tuesday early evening. Residents will celebrate getting out and meeting their neighbors in Joe Balderrama Park. Crown Heights will gather at the neighborhood Communty Resource Center; and Libby neighbors will gather at Libby Lake Park.
BOOK LAUNCH – O’Side’s Fred Rivera will launch his novel, “Raw Man,” at the ranch of fellow and award-winning author Victor Villasenor at 2 p.m., Aug. 30. Noted screen actor Edward James Olmos, a cousin of Fred’s, is expected to attend. “Raw Man” is a Vietnam war story published by former O’side publisher Thorn Sully.
ANOTHER RUN – Former O’side businessman Matt Hall will run for another term as Carlsbad Mayor. Matt has been on the Carlsbad City Council since 1994, and four years ago took over from long-time Mayor Claude “Bud” Lewis.
