Encinitas CA— Just before Midnight on September 5th, 2016, Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station and deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to a Pacific Sun freight train vs. pedestrian collision on the railroad tracks at the intersection of East D Street, just south of the Encinitas Transit Station, located, 25 East D Street in the City of Encinitas.
A northbound Pacific Sun freight train was traveling at approximately (48) forty-eight miles per hour when the engineer observed a pedestrian step in front of the oncoming train and lay down on the railroad tracks. The train’s engineer activated the warning horn, but the pedestrian did not move. The pedestrian was struck by the train and succumbed to his injuries.
The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit will be handling the investigation. Anyone with information about this case can call the Sheriff’s Department’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
