Camp Pendleton CA— This afternoon, September 12, 2016 at approximately 3:50 PM, a 74 year-old female from San Diego was driving her 2004 Chrysler Pacifica southbound on I-5 near Santa Margarita River, just north of Oceanside, at an unknown speed.
According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to veering to the right of the roadway and into the water below.

The vehicle overturned several times before becoming completely submerged in approximately 6 to 8 feet of water.
Camp Pendleton Swift Water Rescue along with Camp Pendleton Fire Department personnel were able to extricate the driver from the vehicle however she was pronounced dead on scene.
It is unknown if driving under the influence or a medical condition contributed to this collision and the accident remains under investigation. The name of the victim is being withheld until family has been notified.
