Oceanside CA— The One Book, One San Diego adult selection for the 2021 region-wide read is “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist” by Judith Heumann and Kristen Joiner. As part of the One Book, One San Diego programming, Oceanside Public Library will host free public screenings and guided discussion of the documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.” The documentary will be screened in person at the Mission Branch Library located at 3861-B Mission Ave. on Tuesday, October 19 at 5:00 p.m. On Wednesday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m. the screening will be online. The documentary “Crip Camp” shares the experiences of one group of disabled young people and their journey to activism and adulthood, and in doing so, provides an opportunity for all to delve into the rich and complicated history of disability activism, culture, and history. In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp for disabled teens in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place where campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated west to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions. The film runs 1 hour and 46 minutes and is rated R.
