Carlsbad’s newest fire station is ready for operation, city officials announced Feb. 29.

Fire Station 3 officially moved from an old converted house off Chestnut Avenue to a new location just to the south, providing first-responders with a modern building and expanded space, according to a city news release.

“Our new Fire Station 3 is better positioned to get our firefighters out the door and to the scene of an emergency more efficiently, so they can start making a difference as quickly as possible,” Carlsbad Fire Division Chief Mike Lopez said in the announcement. “The new fire station also accommodates today’s modern fire apparatus, and gives us better access to the immediate neighborhood, to other neighborhoods in Carlsbad, and to emergencies on Interstate 5 and Highway 78.”

The new $6.1 million station is located at the northwest corner of Cannon Road and Wind Trail Way, near El Camino Real, in the growing Robertson Ranch neighborhood.

The station has three vehicle bays, each of which is long enough to accommodate two standard engines or the city’s 63-foot ladder truck, the city stated.

The complex is designed to meet LEED Silver certification standards for environmental sustainability, according to the city.

Construction was funded through the city’s Public Facilities Fund, which comes from developer fees to support construction of public facilities related to the impacts from development, the city stated.
