Three people were hospitalized June 29 after a serious collision at Rancho Santa Fe Road and Camino Junipero in Carlsbad, authorities reported.

Drug intoxication may have been a factor in the crash, according to a Carlsbad Police Department incident report.

At about 9:35 a.m., a 25-year-old man driving a silver Hyundai Tucson ran a red light at southbound Rancho Santa Fe Road and Camino Junipero as a 22-year-old male driver in a black Honda Accord made a left-hand turn onto westbound Camino Junipero, the report stated.

The Hyundai collided with the passenger side of the Honda, in which a 22-year-old male passenger was injured, the report stated. The collision led to severe damage to both cars.

There were lengthy traffic backups on Rancho Santa Fe Road as authorities closed southbound lanes to investigate and clean up the crash site.

The investigation continues, police stated.
