Breweries from Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and San Marcos had a strong showing at the 2023 Brewers Cup of California held in March.

Gold and silver medals went to Black Plague Brewing of Oceanside for its Medusa under the Specialty Stout category (gold) and Supernatural in the Experimental IPA category (silver).

Carlsbad’s Burgeon Beer Co., Pizza Port, Rouleur Brewing Co. and Arcana Brewing also won medals in the competition, which has been presented bi-yearly since 2019 by The Sacramento Area Brewers Guild in partnership with brewers guilds across the state.

Gold medals went to Burgeon for its Clever Kiwi in the Session Beer category, Pizza Port for its Le Village under Belgian Strong Pales and Rouleur for its Domestique Blonde Ale under Belgian Low Gravity Ales. Rouleur also received bronze for its Puckeur Factor in Experimental/Specialty Beers. Arcana Brewing earned a bronze medal for its Benevolent Dictator under American Imperial Porters and Stouts.

Vista’s Eppig Brewing received three medals — gold for its Sinister Path under Irish Stouts, silver for its 6th Anniversary Imperial Schwarzbier under Other Strong Ale or Lager, and bronze for its Natural Bridge: Vienna Lager for Session Beer. Pure Project Brewing in Vista won bronze for its Esoteric Knowledge in the Juicy or Hazy Imperial or Double IPA category.

Double Peak Brewing Co. in San Marcos won a gold medal for its Creekside Pale Ale in the American-Style Pale Ale category.

The San Diego region had 11 breweries in this year’s Brewers Cup of California earning a total 13 gold medals, according to a news release from the San Diego Brewers Guild. Statewide, 191 breweries participated, and there were 83 categories.

San Diego County breweries brought home 37 medals, including eight silver and 16 bronze in addition to the 13 golds.

“The overall total is nearly double the 19 medals collected by local breweries at the 2021 competition,” the San Diego Brewers Guild noted in its news release.
