I was an executive at the famed Hotel del Coronado and had just staged a 25th anniversary celebration of director Billy Wilder’s legendary film “Some Like It Hot,” starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. I invited everyone for a fabulous weekend of fun. Lemmon, Curtis and Wilder showed up, along with many of the supporting cast still living. It was a flawless weekend that went off exactly as I had planned it.
During my many years of “Following the Sun,” there were interesting and historic encounters scattered around the globe. Many of these experiences were not big stories in themselves but memorable snippets out of my charmed life.
As the winds of war once again begin to blow, it is interesting to take a look back at how our nation became the world’s leading armed force. There are numerous historical resources to call upon, but one book I first read some 35 years ago chronicles just how unprepared this nation was for our defense, let alone launch any sort of offensive movement.
We’ve often thought of Reuben and Rachel. There were a lot of events and places we saw during our 13 years of marriage, but near the top of the list has to be our wonder 12 hours we spent with Reuben and Rachel Smith of the Okefenokee Swamp.
Looking back, those anxious, youthful years passed ever so swiftly. After eight decades, it’s amazing at how fast all my years have flown by. The rapidity of time passes at unbelievable speed. The older one gets, the faster time flies. Still, my pursuit continues as I “Follow the Sun” ... if only in my dreams.
Since my early days on this planet, I’ve always looked to the West for my destiny. From my very first family vacation as a youngster, I’ve always wanted to “Follow the Sun.”
Since the founding of the nation, daily newspapers have played an important role in American society. Here locally, San Diego County’s newspapers have been important to our everyday life … that is until the last few years.
