In a story published on Feb. 9, an explanation regarding the certification of Encinitas Right to Vote Initiative signatures was vague.

The story originally stated that the initiative earned special election status after its supporters managed to collect 8,347 signatures, of which 5,668 came from registered voters in the city. The total number of signatures submitted was 8,526, according to a registrar of voters document dated Jan. 16. Encinitas Right to Vote organizers rejected signatures they deemed likely to be invalid, leading to their number of 8,347 upon submission to the city clerk. The number of signatures required to qualify for special election status was 5,668, according to a document from the city clerk. The registrar of voters verified 6,850 of the total submitted. That does not necessarily mean that unverified signatures would have been invalid, however.
