Update: Suspect in standoff dead

A suspect involved in a 10-hour standoff in Encinitas was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Feb. 21 at 1:38 a.m., authorities reported.

Two sheriff’s deputies were shot and injured when they approached the suspect about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at a house in the 700 block of Del Rio Avenue in Encinitas in a follow-up call to one made at 1 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department stated. The standoff forced the evacuation of nine homes and closed portions of Leucadia Boulevard, Saxony Road and Del Rio Avenue.

A sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, Crisis Negotiation Team and regional SWAT teams remained on the scene after dark. Deputies sent robots into the house at 1:30 a.m. to check on the suspect. After the house was considered safe, the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail entered the house at 1:38 a.m. and found the suspect’s body with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a report released at 2:31 a.m.

The official cause of death will be determined by the county Medical Examiner’s Office. The sheriff’s Homicide Unit will continue its investigation throughout the day, according to the report.

Evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes around 3 a.m., authorities stated.

According to Sheriff’s Department reports, the incident began about 1 p.m. when deputies from the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station responded to a call from a woman reporting that her son, who was upset about a restraining order she issued against him, had come to her house and then left with her car.

The suspect returned to the house at about 3:30 p.m. Deputies arrived on the scene and deployed tear gas when the 22-year-old man refused to obey commands, authorities stated.

The two deputies were injured when the suspect shot at them as they approached him, the Sheriff’s Department reported. One deputy was grazed on the forehead, and was treated at a hospital and released. The second deputy suffered a leg injury and is in stable condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The Sheriff’s Department has not released the names of the suspect and deputies.
