Man killed in shooting was filmmaker, humanitarian

Authorities identified a man killed March 28 in an Olivenhain shooting as John Charles Upton Jr., a filmmaker and humanitarian, according to media reports.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department released Upton’s name in a statement. Authorities arrested Michael Vilkin, 61, in the death and are charging him with murder, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

A profile page at Media4aCause lists Upton, 56, as a founder and volunteer producer. Media reports on March 29 noted Upton’s work in helping Romanian orphans.

“He is best known for his work and collaboration with Romanian Orphans which ultimately freed over 5000 children,” Upton’s Media4aCause profile states. “He is passionate about start up charities, and supports them through Media4aCause.”

Authorities found Upton dead from a gunshot wound early March 28 at a Lone Jack Road property in Olivenhain, apparently the result of a residential dispute, according to a Sheriff’s Department report.
