ENCINITAS: Fermentation Festival on Feb. 1 showcases age-old method of food preservation

ENCINITAS — The San Diego-based Fermenters Club hosts its first San Diego Fermentation Festival on Feb.1, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at The Ranch (formerly the Ecke Ranch), 450 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas. The festival will showcase the age-old way to preserve and transform food. More than a dozen local artisanal businesses that make and sell items such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, mead, coffee, chocolate, bread and beer will be at the festival. Keynote speaker Sandor Ellix Katz, author of several books, including New York Times Bestseller and James Beard Award winning “The Art of Fermentation,” will take questions from attendees. Workshops and presentations will also be included. Music will be provided by Tinkersmith. Proceeds from the festival go to the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. Admission: $25, or $35 with age-21-and-up access to the Ambrosia Garden for samples of mead, cider, beer and wine. Online: www.sandiegofermentationfestival.com.
