Encinitas Councilwoman Catherine Blakespear announced last week that she will run for mayor this year.

Blakespear made the announcement public online Feb. 28 after announcing her plans to run at her 40th birthday party the day before.

“The Mayor of Encinitas sets the tone for the city, manages the City Council agenda and acts as the spokesperson for the city,” she said in the announcement. “I think I offer the right combination of what Encinitas residents want in their Mayor — environmentally focused, prudent with city finances and a consensus-builder about the issues that matter to Encinitas voters. In short, a level-headed, professional, pragmatic leader who listens.”

Current Mayor Kristin Gaspar, the city’s first elected mayor, is running for the county Board of Supervisors 3rd District seat, currently held by former Solana Beach City Council member Dave Roberts.
