Train hits, kills pedestrian in Encinitas, authorities report

A female pedestrian was killed Oct. 29 when she was hit by an Amtrak train near Vulcan Avenue in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The northbound Amtrak train was traveling at about 84 mph when the engineer spotted the pedestrian running toward the tracks near 1012 N. Vulcan Ave., according to a Sheriff’s Department statement. The train went into emergency braking but struck the pedestrian as she ran onto the tracks.
Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to the incident at 7:40 p.m. The pedestrian, whose name and age were not provided in the statement, was pronounced dead at the scene.
